An Interactive Art Gallery and Lab Report

The final project will be an art gallery where students will be showcasing their art and will be acting as artists in residence. They will need to verbalize how they created their artwork and why they created it the way they did. Students will also be encouraged to explain the meaning and process behind their art, speaking to the larger social commentary. This final project will require students to write small introduction pieces about their artwork as well as explain the chemical process that they have used. Art and science teachers will be expected to work with each other and assess the students’ knowledge, growth, and understanding of both art and chemistry. Students will need to write a formal synopsis on their artwork as well as a formal lab report on the chemical process they used to create their art. This project will be continually built as the students will slowly, over the four weeks, create their final art display and lab report. This allows for the maximum amount of scaffolding to occur for students as they will be continually working towards one final goal.

This project should be fully completable within the classroom. Time will be given to students to explore the chemical natures, chemical equations, and the necessary knowledge to measure and create safe and effective chemical artwork. Students will be expected to measure all the materials and explain the chemical reactions and stoichiometry behind their artwork. Students will then, if asked, be able to verbalize what reactions took place and how they conceptualized the chemistry behind the art to create their final project.

As this is such a large project, students will be expected to work in strategically-formed studio groups of 2-4, where students will help one another with art and science concepts. These studio groups will present with one another and create the artwork as a group. They will also work with one another in their chemistry classes, however, students will be expected to submit individual lab reports and art synopsis.
