Formative Assessments:

-
Sticky Note Brainstorming: A way for teachers to see the progress and placement of the whole class.
-
KWL Chart
-
Exit Slips: A simple question for students to complete before leaving class.
-
Glenbow Museum Journal Response: Students will submit a journal response outlining the techniques, compositional strategies, and motifs they noticed during their field trip. They will reference this entry when designing their final art piece.
-
Artist Critique: Students will write a brief synopsis on Cai Guo Qiang’s artwork and his inspirations in reference to Chinese contemporary art. The students will then pick one art piece and write a short critique using skills developed throughout previous classes and the unit. This will be graded, and the students will receive feedback for the incorporation of this section into the final lab report at the end of the unit.
-
Informal Formative Assessment and Feedback of Art Projects and Chemistry Practice Problems/Lab Report
-
Magnifying Glass Activity: Students will use a magnifying glass and light to create wood/paper burned art. They will also need to explain the process through chemical reactions.
-
Chemistry Art Analysis: After learning about the chemical processes used by Cai Guo Qiang, students will write a short introduction about his artwork using chemistry concepts covered in class. This will be graded, and the students will receive feedback for the incorporation of this section into the final lab report at the end of the unit.
-
Fun Formative Review Strategies: In the form of Kahoot or other fun formative activities to monitor whole class understanding.
-
Chemistry Mid-Unit Quiz: Students will write a quiz which will be graded, but returned to the students with feedback to improve their skills and understanding for the final lab report.
-
Studio Check-Ins/Practice: Teachers will interview studio groups and assess their learning.
-
In-Class Response: A simple response to showcase students learning.
-
Teacher Circulation and Observation
Summative Assessment:

-
Artist Statement: A student-written statement about the process and idea behind their art piece.
-
Self-Evaluation/Critique: A student-written self-assessment and critique of their art and in reference to Cai Guo Qiang’s original work.
-
Chemistry Mid-Unit Quiz: See above for more details.
-
Lab Report: A formal chemistry lab report where they explain the process of art through a chemist’s lens.
-
Art Critique: See above for more details.
-
Chemistry Art Analysis: See above for more details.
-
Final Art Piece and Presentation: A final large-scale art installation that combines both chemical and artistic knowledge. Students will need to be able to verbally explain the process, any scientific concepts used, and any questions that they are asked.
The assessments that will be used in this interdisciplinary education will be a combination of both summative and formative assessment.
